Granit Xhaka slams teammates at Arsenal
Ian Wright criticized Arsenal star Granit Xhaka for answering an interview after the team's defeat to Newcastle United in the Premier League. Xhaka said he was very disappointed with his team-mates.
Arsenal's hopes of getting into the top four were dashed after being beaten 0-2 by Newcastle at St James' Park last weekend. Mikel Arteta's troops now have to beat Everton in the last match, while hoping that their main rivals Tottenham Hotspur fall.
After Arsenal's loss to Newcastle, Xhaka lashed out at his team-mates and said anyone 'unprepared for the pressure' should 'stay home and watch'.
"If you perform like this, you don't deserve to play in the Champions League," Granit said. "If you don't listen to the coach, if you do your own thing on the pitch, it doesn't work.
“People always talk about leaders. We don't play tennis, we play football, we are 11 against 11, we need everyone on the pitch."
"It doesn't matter the age. If someone is not ready for this kind of pressure, stay at home and watch the game from home."
"You can't come here and perform like this. We can't accept it. We saw today very, very badly."
Ian Wright's Response
According to Arsenal legend Ian Wright the comments were 'very strange' and said Xhaka should have had the conversation in the dressing room.
"Seeing a player come out and say 'they didn't listen to the coach's instructions' is a very strange interview from Granit Xhaka," Wright said.
"To say it now, I don't think it helps anyone. That's the kind of talk that goes on in the dressing room."
At the same time, former Manchester United and England defender Gary Neville also commented on Xhaka's comments.
"I think I heard him say, 'stay at home if you don't have the ball.' So he was obviously disappointed in the guys in the dressing room. I don't know who he is aiming for, I hope he doesn't appoint a younger player," said Neville.
